Hello lovely and happy Wednesday,

I am seated in my living room, coffee is going cold, Theo and Louis are sleeping and the morning sun rise is moving across the hardwood turning it from caramel to a rich golden hue. There is so much movement in the world right now. So much noise, so many sharp edges, so much that asks for our attention all at once. And yet—there are still quiet places and spaces; they exist because we create them... Where does quiet live for you? Where do you find peace? It lives in the way morning light settles across a wall. In the soft arc of a branch outside our windows. In the hush of the tide as it arrives, and leaves, and returns again.

It is hard to know quiet and peace in the rush of the day, hence my preference for the in-between stolen moments... when the kettle hums, when a dog rests its head against a leg, when the air shifts and you notice it. We have always known what and how to choose differently - to nurture our inner world and visions. To create and reach for what lasts. To surround ourselves with things that offer and generate emotion, joy, energy, rather than things that demand… That's the empty cycle we have each known and grown from. Current contemporary life is chaotic. Our inner worlds and homes need not be. Calm can be created, sustained, and shared when we are feeling ease. It starts in us and emanates from us.

What sustains you these days? A hug? A warm cup of tea? The first few week of autumnal fires in the evening? A spring stroll for our friends in the Northern Hemisphere? Blossom trees? Birdsong after a long winter? Kookaburras celebrating dawn? Friends who pop in and share a laugh? Clients who grow and celebrate transformation? A fun evening out with a friend - delighting as she dances in her seat when her 'hall-pass' comes on stage (saw Sting perform, Friday night - photo below...).....Healthy wholesome foods and freshly cut flowers? A painting that holds a season inside it? A colour that steadies the room? I recently painted my studio two opposing colours- Setting Plaster (a dusty pink) and Transformation Green (olive green) and I feel cocooned in the warmth. Do you have a piece of furniture that nurtures? My mum had a chair and she named it The Peace of Mind chair. We each would go sit in it and sink....it felt gorgeous....peace of mind came in that chair. It was a funny joke at first but as my siblings and I aged, we 'got it'! It was a piece that did not shout for attention, but quietly became part of our life. I cherish the photographs of that chair with family taking a moment in it...

I suppose this is why I paint. It brings me in to a deep calm state that I had previously never known. And my goal is always to share that feeling state - either here in my Musings, or through my artful pieces and paintings. I don't want my creations and life to just be decorative... just something to hang— just someone to know causally. I love depth, richness, and connections. I want and crave the same: something and people to return to again and again. Yesterday I had the pleasure of visiting a new collector in their home to measure out a wall for her commission but we actually spent more time in the garden, looking at her incredible 1000+++ orchids that she grows!!! You are all amazing! Miniature bougainvillea and winter flowering orchids. My goodness I was in heaven. My work is a vehicle for me to meet, create, support and sustain a community of joy, beauty, peace and tenderness. Her cat gave me the stare as we walked around and then sank back in to deep peace. Animals know. They know ease. They know stillness. They know rest when they are amongst their people. When I returned to my studio I was then treated by more visitors and our conversations were fulfilling, rich....How do we nurture our young people to believe they can pursue their dreams when the labour market seems so fickle? How do we let ourselves try something new, have fun with it and not make it into something that has to be so overly complicated...

On days that feel full, and days that feel uncertain, and the ordinary, beautiful ones in between we are allowed to know joy, connection, and peace. We are allowed to continue to seek out and create places for our eyes to rest, places for our thoughts to soften. We are allowed to create a place that reminds each other —without needing words—that there is still beauty here.

Always. And you are allowed to live inside it.

With love,
Jamila xx
