Paintings that become part of your story

My intention is to make the experience of acquiring art both seamless and deeply enjoyable. When we collaborate on a commission, we begin with your space. We explore the atmosphere you wish to create, the emotional tone you want to evoke, your preferred colour palette, and compositional ideas — perhaps a rambling cottage garden, a lyrical still life, a stand of trees in a romantic landscape, or a quiet seascape.

We meet either in person or via video consultation. Together, we confirm the scale, framing style, budget, timeframe, and delivery arrangements.

The beauty of commissioning a work is that you acquire a painting created specifically for you — considered in scale, proportion, and palette — designed to live harmoniously within your home. It is a truly bespoke acquisition.

Materials

I paint with oils and have a preference for European brands. My canvases are crafted from imported Italian linen, stretched over kiln-dried timber frames. Each painting is professionally framed here in Brisbane. I am particularly drawn to blackwood frames for their quiet elegance and ability to embrace the work with warmth and refinement. That said, the final framing decision is always yours.

Time frame

Oil paintings require time to cure properly — typically between three and six months, depending on humidity and thickness of paint. Once your painting is complete, I will share detailed photographs and videos for your approval. We then allow the work to dry fully before arranging delivery, ensuring it reaches you in perfect condition.

JEN’S STORY

Jen spent five years living with an empty wall - quietly holding space for something she knew had to be just right. The painting, ‘Gloria’, was created on commission for she and her young family in Brisbane.

Its name was chosen by the collector herself, it is her grandmother's name - making it all the more personal - a reflection not just of the work, but of her story.

Her home already carried deep meaning. She had inherited her grandmother’s dining table and sideboard - pieces rich with memory and history. But the large wall around them remained untouched. Not for lack of trying, but because she was waiting. For five years, she searched. And then one day I saw her as she was getting in to her car... she had on a top with the name of a surf store on it. I knew the store in Tofino, British Columbia and so I had to say, HEY! It was a funny moment as she was stunned. Samford Valley is a small area of Queensland and Tofino British Columbia is not well known outside of Canada... We giggled, exchanged stories and then she said, wait, are those paintings, I've been seeking something...

Jen walked in and knew right away. My paintings of rambling cottage gardens reminded her of her grandparents garden in Victoria, B.C. and she wanted one. We set a time for a visit and I went to her home. We toured her home and garden, I heard family stories and learned about how she used her space. ‘Gloria’, 2m x 100cm, was an absolute delight to paint and Jen tells me she has tea every morning with her.

KIRSTEEN’S STORY

“We were fortunate to already own one of Jamila’s paintings, spying it in the window of a gallery during a road trip from Melbourne to Canberra….. that piece resonated so much with us we bought it on the way back home. The commission idea came from ‘just knowing’ Jamila’s talent would beautifully capture a very special piece we wanted for our beach house entry hall.

“We were drawn to the raw emotion Jamila conveys though the composition and texture of her work.

During the process Jamila became personally invested in our story and strived at every step to collaborate with us and bring a joint vision to life! Her genuine care, passion and commitment to working together to create something so unique and special made working with Jamila a delight.

“Our wonderful Moonahs now proudly hang in our entryway, bringing the outside in while filling the area with a feeling of resilience, hope and new beginnings. The piece has transformed our space; it is welcoming, calming, and also conveys a feeling of strength and growth as only nature can do! We often find ourselves pausing to reflect on the piece and soak up what the artwork means to us.

“We would highly recommend Jamila to commission a painting. This was our first time and working together to create a piece together was a lovely experience with a wonderful end result.”
