Original oil paintings inspired by light, gardens, and the places we call home

Paintings that feel as though they have always belonged

Hello, I am Jamila,

I am so pleased that you are here.

For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by the places we call home. Not simply the houses we live in, but the lives unfolding within them …books we cherish and return to again and again; a favourite chair beside the window; flowers gathered from the garden; and how natural light transforms a familiar room from one hour to the next.

Prior to becoming a full-time painter, I spent many years working as an anthropologist in PNG, Mexico, Guatemala, Turkey, The Philippines, Western Samoa, and many other wonderful places. Although my profession has changed, that way of seeing the world has never left me. Today it accompanies me on early morning walks through Samford Valley with Theo and Louis, in to the homes of collectors who invite me to create paintings for them, and back in to the studio where those observations gradually find their way onto the canvas.

My intention has always been to create paintings that bring beauty, warmth, and delight to a home; paintings that feel as though they have always belonged, and become part of your story.

Whether you are searching for a significant painting for your home, considering a commission, collecting one of my botanical studies or wrapping yourself in one of my silk scarves, I hope that you find something here that delights with you.

Every piece begins in the same place: a life spent paying attention to light, colour, gardens, and the places we choose to call home.

Alongside my larger paintings, you will also discover botanical studies developed from original oil and charcoal explorations, together with a collection of silk scarves created from my paintings. I have always believed that beauty is not something to be reserved for special occasions. It is something to live with, to wear, to notice, to share, and to enjoy everyday.

Take your time as you explore. View available works, discover past commissions, read my Musings, or simply wander through the collections.

If a painting speaks to you, or you are considering a commission, I would love to hear about the place you call home.

“It a mystery why some paintings capture my heart and soul but there’s no denying it happens.

“Some of it is colours and some of it is feeling. I spotted two Jamila Hume paintings on Satch & Co’s Instagram. I was in love. Happenstance saw me travel through Holbrook soon after – a chilly morning was warmed by an ever so quick coffee stop. It was hard to get back on the road – I’d taken the chance to dash across the road to see for myself those hanging glories in the gallery’s front windows. My love grew.

“In the charming Satch & Co. gallery window two deep blue and emotive paintings hung either side of the doorway – richest deepest dark blue with bewitching floral shapes. One joyful, one soulful. To me they were mesmerising. A few phone calls and a few weeks later the first arrived in a truck right to my door some 4 and 1/2 hours away. By then it was COVID. I was living and working alone and the painting’s arrival was uplifting for my spirits. Immediately it settled in.

“Several months, if not a year later, and my heart had not stopped aching for the other I had seen. So I made another call. Yes, it was still available and it came to live here too. Every day – in fact multiple times a day, my eyes drink in the two. They were moved across different walls and then they settled. Rather than hang - each rests on a table unframed, one either side of a window, bringing a sense of calm and depth to my living room every single day, every single evening.

“Thank you Jamila for your artistry.”

“Working with Jamila and commissioning an artwork for a large expanse of bare wall in our kitchen was a delight from start to finish; right from an initial FaceTime walk through of the space to delivery of the professionally wrapped piece.

The completed painting reflects, and complements the changing seasons that can be seen through the windows behind it, and gives us great pleasure and enjoyment. ”
