When your walls feel quiet, in the wrong way....
Hello lovely!
Happy April! How is your heart?
I was at a gathering on Saturday evening and I had a conversation with a woman who shared how she happened on to her art collection which comprises three paintings and a lamp. A lamp? Yes, a lamp. I loved this story so much, and it resonated with me so I had to share.
This gorgeous woman is like you and I. She is highly accomplished, works FT, has a family, has spent a lot of time in deep contemplation about her space, peace, sanity, health, fitness and change of life...you know the list we each have going at all times. Five years ago, she and her family purchased a home and lived in it for years when one day she realised how empty and stale she felt - how uncomfortable she was in her home. She felt that things were wonderful but not quite right - they were unfinished - but not in an obvious way. Her home is -for lack of a better word, deluxe. It was a new build and they moved in and thought: done. Every room was beautifully furnished, all the linens were aligned with the colour palette of the home. But over time she started to realise a few things: she had outgrown the way she had once lived in, and used her space. Her children were grown and spending more time engaged in their own lives. The dining table she had cherished for years was not quite right and the den where they spent a lot time reading, watching movies, and enjoying the fire, felt too quiet... She had spent a LOT of time choosing the lounge and she was not about to purchase a new one. She shared the television was massive and took up most of the space on one wall. She shared the fireplace was on the other wall. She said she wanted something to bring new energy in to the space, something to ground the space, but knew the focal points were the fireplace and the television. To resolve this, she bought a lamp. That one simple lamp for her brought that entire room together. Five years in and it was an Italian ceramic lamp that made the room move from quiet to full. I loved this story and it is one that I relate to a lot.
Here's my story: I lived with a simple queen sized mattress on four tiny little legs for 2 years. For two years I searched for my bed frame. TWO YEARS!!! I went everywhere, looked at everything. I had a look and feel that I wanted to experience but I could not find it. Finally, one day, the colour flashed across my eye as I was walking through a shop and I knew I had found it. Of course, it needed to be made and then delivered which took another four months. I waited for two years and four months to fill my bedroom...then the rest of it took a bit of time and to be honest, I only purchased my chest of drawers last year. I found the most beautiful Edwardian style mahogany chest of drawers in an antique shop. I wanted the items I brought in to the bedroom to not just fill the space but to resolve that quiet empty air that was floating around.
Have you had that experience? An area or a corner is filled with empty space and a quiet that feels too open and big? I meet a lot of people who experience this - many come in to my studio and express how they have waited two, four, and five years for the right painting. Some say they didn't know they were looking until they see one of my paintings and suddenly, they know the exact spot for the work.
Jen is one such collector who waited five years to find the right painting. Five years of living with an empty wall—quietly holding space for something she knew had to be just right. The painting below, GLORIA, was created on commission for she and her young family in Brisbane. Its name was chosen by the collector herself, it is her grandmother's name - making it all the more personal—a reflection not just of the work, but of her story. Her home already carried deep meaning. She had inherited her grandmother’s dining table and sideboard—pieces rich with memory and history. But the large wall around them remained untouched. Not for lack of trying, but because she was waiting. For five years, she searched. And then one day I saw her as she was getting in to her car...she had on a top with the name of a surf store on it. I knew the store in Tofino, British Columbia and so I had to say, HEY! It was a funny moment as she was stunned. Samford Valley is a small area of Queensland and Tofino British Columbia is not well known outside of Canada...We giggled, exchanged stories and then she said, wait, are those paintings, I've been seeking something... Jen walked in and knew right away. My paintings of rambling cottage gardens reminded her of her grandparents garden in Victoria, B.C.and she wanted one. We set a time for a visit and I went to her home. We toured her home and garden, I heard family stories and learned about how she used her space. Gloria, 2m - 100cm was an absolute delight to paint and Jen tells me she has tea every morning with her.
What we bring in to our homes has the power to change the entire energy of the space. Art, books, furniture needs to feel like it belongs. We are not adding things, nor are we imposing objects. Like Jen, and many other collectors - myself included! - the paintings, furniture, lamps need to be just right and we need to take our time and listen to ourselves, our heart speak. This is not about trends. It is about honouring ourselves, being confident in what we love, dislike, and desire and going for it. If that takes two years and four months, like it did for me, so be it! Buy once, buy right, is my motto!
