Welcome to my world of whimsy
Creating paintings that become part of your story
Lights, camera, action... I am a morning person who does a little happy dance in the kitchen every day with my dogs (Theo and Louis) as the espresso strength coffee brews on the stove-top. I watch the sunrise, listen to birdsong and read a bit of poetry before I check-in on the world. I abhor overhead lighting and need wool socks in the summer. My mornings are gentle and lovely: I walk the trails and wrestle a corner of my yoga mat away from my dogs to get in a bit of pilates. I once lived a very urban lifestyle and spent way too much money on jeans and dry-cleaning. I now live on a five acre property in Samford Valley, just outside of Brisbane, Australia and have swapped boutiques for the garden centre and overpriced denim for fabulous trainers, gardening gloves and large ceramic planter pots. Easy mornings, whole foods, lovely music, big works of fiction, forest walks, ferry rides, and slow art fuel me. I am more of an Edwardian-antiques-old wooden furniture layered-maximalist than cool-edgy minimalist human.
I am best known for transforming homes, rooms, and hearts with my contemporary take on florals and big trees. My paintings delight collectors who express seeing something new in the work every time they view it. Using a palette knife and paintbrush, I sculpt oil paint in to blousy bouquets and large-scale whimsical cottage gardens. My textured works render the painting multi-dimensional; the colours are unique and change as the light moves across the work. My exhibitions sell-out and I have a robust commission wait-list.
I exhibit and collaborate with galleries and private collectors. These days the majority of my time is spent painting commissions for private collectors. To learn more about my process, view this short video. My art hangs in beautiful homes in the UK, Europe, Canada, America, Australia, Isreal, and, Sri Lanka. My works are floral focused; after all, flowers are the original love language. I paint my collections by reading poetry and building a story that sutures the works together. Deep blues, an abundance of greens, lemon butter yellows, rusted muted autumnal orange and quinacridone maroon are among my signature colours. If you described my style and method it would be slow, steady, intentional, deep. I share my love of painting, nature, animals and travel via my Instagram @jamilahume_art where you will likely see photos of wildflowers, my atelier, and my Labradors visiting neighbouring cows and horses.
Born in England to a Moroccan father and British mother, I moved with my family as a young child to Vancouver, Canada. I have a BA and MA in cultural anthropology and spent over 22 years in the resources sector, working in remote and rural areas around the world. I focused on socio-economic development and worked with the World Bank and large NGOs on issues of social justice particular to women and children.
As a child I found inspiration in the works of Emily Carr, Jack Shadbolt, Bill Reid, Picasso, Monet - while incredibly different artists, they each celebrated nature in a way that captivated my heart and mind. In 2016, at 44 years of age, I decided to pursue my childhood dream of painting. Armed with a healthy dose of naivety mixed with zeal, I relocated part-time to Florence, Italy and spent 18 months painting, touring galleries and museums, eating gelato, hiking the Tuscan hills, and shopping at local vegetable and flea markets. It was an immensely creative time for me. I am hugely curious about life and I am interested in expanding in to the fullest expression of myself as an artist and human being. Along these lines, I am committed to inspiring my beautiful engaged community to nurture themselves through nature, creative endeavours, and friendships.
I believe the best homes are well-loved and well lived-in; they have overflowing bookcases, corners of curiosity; they celebrate colour, textures, art, plants, animals, and food. Most of all, I believe that homes are our havens that support our souls as we journey through this life experience. Having art that is meaningful and that tells a personal story hanging on walls elevates a space and our hearts. Homes that are rounded-out slowly over time tell the stories of who we are and what we love. It is a wonderful gift we offer ourselves when we invest in a bespoke painting. I always tell my collectors: the painting you purchase from me will be a backdrop to your life. Photographs will be taken to mark key moments in your life, the painting on the wall will be ever present and form part of your memories of home. It's important to get that right...
I work full-time in my studio which is located at the Lifestyle Centre on Mt. Glorious Road, in Samford Valley. Here you will find me in paint splattered trousers, listening to an eclectic playlist, while my labradors snore on the deck. You are welcome to visit my atelier, chat about painting, or admire the view from my studio deck.
